CUTTING CONTAMINATION IN HOSPITALS ASSA ABLOY Security Doors, part of ASSA ABLOY UK has supplied innovative cleanroom doors to an NHS Foundation Trust hospital in Central London. St Thomas’ Hospital, based on Westminster Bridge Road, London, is a prominent landmark due to its location opposite the Houses of Parliament on the banks of the River Thames. The hospital provides a full range of hospital facilities for the local community, which includes specialist services for cancer, cardiac and renal conditions. St Thomas’ also integrates comprehensive education training and works in close collaboration with King’s College London to qualify future doctors and nurses. ASSA ABLOY Security Doors worked closely with the hospital to correctly specify doors, which would contribute significantly towards hygiene, as well as providing important security and access features. Powershield cleanroom steel doorsets were specified to reduce the development of surface bacteria and prevent the spread of infections throughout the hospital. ASSA ABLOY Security Doors installed the doors in the new Central Sterile Services Department in the hospital over a period of two weeks. The six-storey office development at 6 Agar Street comprises 55,000 sq ft of new Grade A office space. Completed at the end of 2012, the building has been transformed to create an entirely new office scheme, while preserving the listed façades on Chandos Place and Bedford Street. By calling on both Longden Doors and Fitzpatrick Metal Doors, Morgan Sindall was able to achieve LGP’s desired aesthetic for the internal fit-out and a secure solution for the internal doorsets. Longden Doors supplied 96 Gloucester horizontal panelled doorsets, finished in American White Oak and brushed stainless steel hinges to help complete the look. Fitzpatrick supplied a number of its Firecel doorsets, designed to meet a requirement for prolonged fire resistance for periods of up to 240 minutes. Fitzpatrick also supplied its steel doorset solution Securicel, which is strong enough to resist attack made with heavy tools such as hand drills and claw hammers. All Fitzpatrick doorsets were finished in polyester powder coated RAL White Aluminium, in keeping with the requirements of the building.
