The new 12,000 seat arena, which will become the largest entertainments venue in Scotland following its grand opening on 30th September, is located at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre complex on the bank of the River Clyde in Glasgow and spans an impressive 25,700m 2 . Supplying 350 metal doorsets from its Soundcel™ and Firecel® ranges, Fitzpatrick’s metal doorsets were installed both internally and around perimeter areas in a bid to help keep travelling sound levels to a minimum whilst also meeting the requirements of the building’s fire containment plan. With an expected 1.5 million visitors a year, safety was obviously a top priority, hence the provision of Fitzpatrick Firecel® 120, accredited by the independent CERTIFIRE scheme, which ensures 120 minutes of fire resistance. The doorsets were fitted in the lobbies that are located on each floor, providing protection in ‘higher risk’ fire areas. Due to the nature of the venue, there was a clear need for acoustic privacy too, which led to Fitzpatrick’s Soundcel™ doorsets being installed. Developed using mineral wool or honeycomb cores, the Soundcel™ doorsets used on The SSE Hydro Centre reduce sound of up to 40RwdB. Used throughout the VIP areas, the doorsets provide some much needed quiet space in what can understandably be a very noisy environment at times. All of the doorsets were finished with a RAL 9010, pure white, polyester powder coating. By using this finish, a clean look could be achieved that is both fresh and consistent throughout. Russell Grove, Sales and Marketing Manager, commented: “All Fitzpatrick doors from the Firecel® and Soundcel™ ranges are thoroughly third-party tested. This ensures that the performance characteristics of the doorsets are proven – something that is incredibly important, given the public nature of the building.” The iconic £125 million structure includes a number of restaurants, bars and sponsor lounges, which should help generate an extra 2,449 jobs. Expected to play host to around 140 events each year – including a variety of national and international artists and comedy stars – The Hydro has also been selected as a venue for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
