Contributing to Organisation and Policymaking in Safety Matters Christoph Marny has been appointed to the IEC - the International Electrotechnical Commission Nothing works without power. The use of electricity has become part of everyday life. We don’t even think about it anymore. However, the use of electrical devices and machines always involves a certain risk. Safety and voltage don’t mix. That’s where the IEC - the International Electrotechnical Commission- comes in. The organisation has been developing international norms and standards in electrical engineering for more than 120 years. Christoph Marny is clearly held in the highest esteem, as witnessed by his appointment to the IEC Committee. From now on, the Regulatory Manager of Chamberlain GmbH will contribute his expertise in the field of product approval, acquired over approximately 30 years, to the MT25 working group. “It is a great honour for me to be able to actively participate in this working group and help shape matters at a leadership level. I now want to contribute my decades of experience to help shape product safety,” says Christoph Marny. The MT25 comprises 17 experts from eight countries and is a working group responsible for electrical drives for gates, doors, windows, roller shutters, awnings, venetian blinds and similar equipment. It is integrated into the Technical Committee TC 61 “Safety of household and similar electrical appliances”. The IEC, based in Geneva, consists of 69 committees representing all the industrialised countries in the world. It aims to promote transnational cooperation in the fields of electrical engineering and electronics and thus to consolidate international consensus. More than half of the over 3,500 IEC standards concern relevant safety issues. Christoph’s’ appointment to an IEC working group is a clear sign of the high regard in which he is held globally. Furthermore, it reflects the central role of safety in Chamberlain GmbH products. Marny, 53, is responsible at the long- established company for approving products for their respective market since the safe and secure use of the products is essential. His expertise underpins compliance with the legal and normative requirements. www.liftmaster.eu Mark Butcher (left) of Birkdale with 2 recent attendees of the Birkdale Residential Door training 18
