Glyn continues: “To obtain SBD accreditation, entrance doorsets must be dual-certified, providing a high level of protection not only against break-ins but also from fire and smoke, which goes beyond current Building Regulations. “This will ensure that, as fire safety standards continue to improve in the wake of the Grenfell tragedy, the product can provide peace of mind that it has been evaluated for fire, smoke and security by independent specialists. “There is a clear cause for dual certification, as our research found that 24% of social housing tenants felt that their entrance door was not secure, and, concerningly, a third did not feel adequately protected from the risk of a break-in. “The result of SBD certification, is peace of mind for the end user, knowing that their landlord has installed doorsets that have been purposefully designed, manufactured and tested to established security standards through one single provider.” What’s more, newly enforced regulation dictates quarterly checks on fire doors in communal areas and annual checks on entrance doors in buildings taller than 11 metres. “Given that internal breaches are equally important when it comes to tenant safety, dual certification of entrance doorsets provides a clear opportunity for those responsible to pay the same due diligence to security as they would to fire protection, as part of both new build and retrofit processes, and address two major concerns in one” Glyn explains. “Everyone deserves to live in a safe and secure home. While there is no silver bullet solution that will ensure this is the case in every property, SBD-accredited doorsets offer a prime opportunity to improve standards.” JELD-WEN’s new whitepaper: ‘Turning the Key Towards Better Security’ calls for dual certification of entrance doorsets as standard, and is now available for free to download at https://www.jeld-wen.co.uk/security-white-paper. 1 https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/police-recorded-crime-open-data-tables 2 One Poll survey of 1,000 social housing tenants, conducted September 2023
