The depot was completed last month and is designed to accommodate 46 new trains for the Tyne and Wear Metro, which Stadler is manufacturing for Nexus. The 6 sets of doors each measure 4000mm wide by 4500mm high and are electrically operated in four leaves, with two leaves folding to each side clear of the opening. The door leaves are constructed from cold rolled galvanised box section dovetail frames, each with 5 No. horizontal glazing transoms. Leaves are 60mm thick and are finished with a polyester powder coat inside and outside. Each set of doors has 24 vision panels of 24mm thick double-glazed windows. The doors are side-hung and without a floor track to ensure door leaves glide across rail tracks and are electrically operated via a smooth, powerful, fast, and efficient helical-worm gear motor producing high torque. The control board integrates with BMS (building management system) and DPS (depot protection system) to create ultimate safety. The completion of the depot at Gosforth is Jewers’ third project for Nexus; it comes after the successful installation of two Swift-SEW doors at their Training Facility in South Shields and another one at the Satellite depot in Howdon, North Tyneside in 2020.
