From First Steps to Full Stride One year of progress, and the changes we promised are taking shape. Settled in and stepping up, DIJ enters 2026 evolving with its industry and ready for more. THIS TIME last year, we were sitting on a big secret at Clearview Group, that we were about to take the reins at the Door Industry Journal. At the time, we couldn’t wait to get started, and that excitement hasn’t lessened ever since. In fact, it has only grown. Our first ‘official’ issue may have been Summer 2025, but for us, it has now been a full year since we first stepped into the DIJ seat. When we took over, we promised some changes, but not too many. Now, those changes are beginning to take shape. You may have already noticed that the magazine is starting to look a little different. What do you think of the new front covers and refreshed format? From the outset, our goal has been to put you in the spotlight, creating space for our customers on the front page and throughout the issue with new section openers. We have also introduced some subtle design touches. Those familiar with our other publications may recognise elements of the ‘Clearview’ style coming through, while we hope still preserving everything that makes DIJ so special. Beyond the printed page, we are also working behind the scenes to bring our online presence up to date and more in line with the wider Clearview ‘family’. It is all part of a wider effort to ensure DIJ continues to evolve alongside the industry it represents. The biggest change for 2026 is right here in your hands. This issue marks the first of four editions this year, as we move from three publications annually to a quarterly schedule, including a brand new Autumn issue, released exactly when you would expect. Ours is an industry that never stands still. Innovation, regulation, technology and customer expectations are always moving forward, and so must we. But while the landscape continues to evolve, some things remain constant. The importance of quality, expertise, collaboration and community are as vital today as they have ever been. That is where DIJ will always stay true, continuing to champion the voices, achievements and insights that make this industry what it is. And finally, as this is our first issue of the year, a slightly belated but very warm Happy New Year to all our readers, contributors and partners. We are excited for everything 2026 has in store and look forward to continuing the journey with you. Thank you, as always, for your continued support. 11 Industry News Also online at www.dijonline.co.uk Door Industry Journal Spring 2026 Competence, Compliance and a Changing Industry Like many organisations across the construction and manufacturing sectors, DHF is keeping a close eye on the distressing events currently unfolding in the Middle East. Beyond the human tragedy, there are understandable concerns about the wider economic impact, particularly around fuel prices and supply chains, both of which directly affect many of our members. We can only hope that the situation stabilises soon. AGAINST THIS uncertain backdrop, the industry continues to move forward with a clear focus on competence and compliance. Expectations across the built environment are rising, and businesses are increasingly recognising that demonstrating knowledge, skills and professionalism is no longer optional — it is essential. This shift was clearly reflected at our recent launch event for the DHF Building Hardware Training Programme, held at the excellent venue of the British Motor Museum. The event marked the introduction of the UK’s first Ofqualregulated and ABBE-accredited qualifications dedicated to the building hardware sector, developed by industry experts to support higher standards and improved regulatory understanding across the manufacturing supply chain. Alongside new qualifications and training programmes, the wider construction industry is also evolving in how competence is demonstrated on site. The ADSA/DHF Partnership Scheme will introduce the new CSCS smart card system, due to go live in April. This will provide a more secure and reliable way of verifying qualifications and training, reinforcing the importance of recognised competence for those working across the built environment. DHF is also continuing its work to support the future workforce as we move forward with plans for an apprenticeship scheme for installers of industrial doors, garage doors and gates. Creating clear training pathways for new entrants will be essential if the industry is to meet growing expectations around competence and professionalism. Readers interested in these topics may also wish to explore other articles in this issue, including guidance on fire shutter compliance in specialist applications and an important technical explanation of how risk assessments interact with standards when demonstrating compliance for doors, gates and barriers. Taken together, these developments highlight a clear direction of travel. Competence is becoming the foundation of compliance, and structured training, recognised qualifications and apprenticeships will all play their part in strengthening the industry for years to come. 14 Industry News Also online at www.dijonline.co.uk Door Industry Journal Spring 2026 DIJ Hits the Road for DHF’s Training Launch TWO MEN walked into a bar… It may sound like the start of a joke but it was actually the start of something that will seriously change the landscape of building hardware training. One night turned into 18 months of development and the UK’s first Ofqualregulated and ABBE-accredited qualifications dedicated to the building hardware industry was born. The Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) has shifted the gears of professional training in our industry. Held at the British Motor Museum in Gaydon, its launch event put the spotlight (or should that be headlights?) on competence, collaboration, and the future of the sector – and DIJ was there to experience it first-hand. Innovation on display – in more ways than one The museum proved the perfect backdrop, with some of the most iconic vehicles in British automotive history reminding attendees that innovation is often the engine of progress. Inside, almost 100 industry professionals were all focused on the future of competence in the sector. The launch showcased a significant change in how competence in the building hardware industry is developed, measured, and recognised. The day began with a presentation mapping out the journey of creating the Core Competence in Building Hardware programme and explaining its practical applications. A journey mapped out – forge your own learning path The programme is comprehensive, covering 178 learning outcomes and 750 assessment criteria, from the history of door hardware to modern smart locking systems. One of its standout features is flexibility: learners can build their own path and select the modules most relevant to their role. As attendees were reminded; customers don’t want to see a salesman – they want to talk to a product expert. This approach ensures that the training equips professionals with the skills and recognised competence to advise, support, and innovate confidently. Fuel for thought – collaboration is key to success The Q&A session was a highlight, with attendees asking insightful questions and a panel discussion exploring assessment methods and the wider impact on industry standards. The presence of representatives from organisations including the Construction Products Association, Master Locksmiths Association, Police CPI, the Office for Product Safety and Standards, CITB, Nottinghamshire County Council Trading Standards, Clearview Group, and BRE reflected a strong, collaborative effort to improve competence across the sector. Driving the future of competence The Core Competence in Building Hardware programme aligns with the Construction Product Competence Standard set out in the Construction Products Association White Paper, placing it at the forefront of wider competence reform. DHF members will have exclusive access for the first six months, with a full public launch scheduled for Spring 2026. The programme represents a muchneeded jump start for the industry, providing a structured, credible, and flexible approach to training that addresses current challenges, including a talent pool that is shrinking faster than it is being replenished. Full speed ahead – after this landmark launch Beyond the presentations, the event offered opportunities to network and discuss ideas with peers across the sector, all over a lovely lunch. The combination of practical insight, collaboration, and friendly conversation made for an engaging and informative day. DHF’s efforts in creating and launching this programme mark a significant milestone for building hardware competence in the UK. It demonstrates how the industry can innovate while keeping professional standards and practical training at the forefront.
15 Industry News Also online at www.dijonline.co.uk Door Industry Journal Spring 2026 Take the GfA challenge How to make sense of complex applications FOR MOST installations, a standard control panel is sufficient. But what happens when it’s not: When a control system needs to manage a fire door in a baggage handling system at a major international airport, manage traffic flow at a recycling plant, or secure priceless artefacts at a museum? Tim Drysch, head of electrical at GfA, is trained in handling the unusual, the complex, and the unexpected. The key, according to Tim, is understanding the environment, the challenge and finding simple, integrated solutions. Here are three challenges that show how bespoke electrical design can turn a problem into a solution. Challenge 1: The Baggage Conveyor Fire Door The Situation: At a major international airport, fire shutters are required over baggage conveyor belts to prevent the spread of fire within airside terminals. The Considerations: This presents a unique conflict of interest. The primary function of the door is to close to stop a fire. However, if the door closes while a suitcase is passing underneath, it will rest on the object, failing to create a smoke-tight seal and compromising the fire rating. Furthermore, the system needs to be reliable; if the mains power fails, the door must remain able to close in power loss. The Solution: GfA utilise a PLC to create a “handshake” between the door and the conveyor system. • Intelligent Obstacle Detection: The system uses photo beams. If a fire alarm triggers whilst the door is open and a bag is blocking the beam, the control panel allows the conveyor system to move the belt in forward or reverse until the obstruction is cleared. Only when the beam is clear does the conveyor system send a signal to our panel to close. Once the door has left the open position the conveyor is inhibited. • Battery Intelligence: The design includes several monitoring systems, for example the battery backup. It constantly checks the voltage and acts depending on the battery status feedback. Challenge 2: High-Security Logic The Situation: For high-security applications, such as museums housing cultural treasures or cash-handling centres, standard locking is insufficient. These sites often require heavy-duty physical locking mechanisms or bollards that engage when the door is closed. The Considerations: The challenge isn’t just locking the door but also preventing the door from destroying itself. If a user tries to open the door while heavy mechanical locks are engaged, the motor could cause catastrophic damage to the door curtain. Conversely, the system must ensure the door is actually locked before giving a “secure” signal. The Solution: The design service implements a strict logic sequence using a PLC and limit switches. • Verification: The system incorporates strict interlocking protocols to ensure reliable communication between the door, locking mechanisms and other security functions. The system cannot be operated until all the conditions of the interlock are met to safeguard access to the building. • Fault Detection: If the door hits the floor but the locks fail to engage (perhaps due to misalignment), the system recognises this “fault condition” and locks out the operation, preventing misuse until the security breach is resolved. It also monitors lock switches when the door is open, via volt-free signals to indicate to control rooms the lock status alongside any errors. Challenge 3: The Universal Retrofit for Retail Logistics The Situation: A major retailer and distribution customer needed to upgrade loading bays across a vast network of sites. The Considerations: The customer required a “universal” solution that could handle varying equipment levels at different depots. They needed a single control panel that could integrate dock levellers, traffic lights, inflatable shelters, and door controls. Crucially, they wanted to minimise the time installers spent on-site wiring complex connections. The Solution: GfA designed a modular, combined control panel. • Integration: The panel combines two interlocks ensuring that neither the dock or the door could impact each other, achieved through door position monitoring and proximity sensing. • Fitter-Friendly Design: To address the installation challenge, the panels were pre-wired and pre-tested prior to dispatch. In the field, clear connection diagrams make for easy connection to the DIN rail meaning installers don’t need to decipher complex schematics on-site; they simply connect specific wires to specific terminals, significantly reducing site time and wiring errors. Whatever your challenge, GfA’s electrical design team and technical team provides the logic that sits between the door and the site’s specific needs. 16 Industry News Also online at www.dijonline.co.uk Door Industry Journal Spring 2026 Grange Farm Development receives SBD Gold One of South Harrow’s most notorious housing estates is undergoing a major regeneration. Phase one of the Grange Farm Estate redevelopment has already received a number of Secured by Design Gold Developers Awards for the project, and has also been commended for at the annual SBD ATLAS awards, recognising the work of Designing out Crime Officer (DOCO) Danny McPhail, the local authority and the developers. ORIGINALLY BUILT in the 1960s as a temporary housing solution to meet rising demand, Grange Farm Estate was one of the last prefab estates still standing in London. Two hundred and eighty two homes were constructed quickly in three-storey blocks using a now-outdated building material called Resiform - a type of glass fibre reinforced polyester panelling. Sixty years later and the flats had begun to seriously deteriorate. Roofs and panels were damaged, homes were inefficient to heat and the whole estate had become increasingly difficult to repair and maintain. Along with the physical decline, Grange Farm Estate had also developed a reputation as a hotspot for crime and disorder. Gang activity and drugs were rife, and violent crime was not uncommon including serious incidents of acid attacks, stabbings and at least one shooting. In 2019 the London Borough of Harrow approved a huge four-phase regeneration programme in partnership with developers Higgins Partnerships and Hawkins Brown Architects. The plan involves demolishing the old blocks to deliver approximately 500 homes, 40% of which will be social housing. The new Grange Farm development will also include a new community centre, shared public open spaces and new walking routes to transport links and local areas. DOCO McPhail from the Metropolitan Police has been a key adviser from the outset. Phase One has already delivered 68 much needed new council homes, and 21 shared ownership properties for locals along with a new network of public streets and squares for communal use. However, recognising that the original pre-approved lighting plan fell very short of SBD crime prevention standards, the Met DOCO created an improved scheme involving extra lighting around the block and communal gardens. On completion the three blocks of flats received SBD Gold awards, but the two town houses initially were awarded Silver. Harrow Council Housing wanted to aim higher and after further measurements suggested by Officer McPhail including the installation of extra lighting, CCTV and intruder alarms, Phase One of the development went on to achieve five SBD gold standard awards. Tenants have already moved in. As a result of the regeneration up-todate crime statistics show only one reported theft of a motor vehicle occurred in the two years since completion, no reports of anti-social behaviour by non-residents and no burglary or criminal damage reports. Harrow Council has now launched Phase Two of the project which aims to deliver two new apartment blocks with secure bike storage and parking spaces, landscaped communal areas, pedestrian friendly streets and a children’s play park. DOCO Danny McPhail commented, “It was a well-designed phase and Higgins understood the Secured by Design requirements. They kept in regular contact and ensured that any concerns were fully discussed and actioned upon. The only issue related to external lighting, which had been agreed without any prior discussion. However once it was identified Higgins addressed all the concerns in a timely manner and rightly obtained five Gold Secured by Design awards for the development.” Yaseen Parkar, Pre-Construction Director (Technical) at Higgins Partnerships, commented: “We are privileged to receive the ‘Highly Commended’ Secured by Design award for our Grange Farm Phase One development. “Not only did the scheme achieve Secured by Design Gold certification, but we were also informed that crime in that part of the estate has been almost non-existent since we handed the project over more than a year ago. To support this achievement, the company are providing Hermione with a 12-month sponsorship, reinforcing its commitment to supporting sporting excellence and opportunity. Hermione’s route into rugby is an inspiring story – one of late beginnings and rapid progression. Having first picked up the sport at the age of 16 during a touch rugby session at Kesteven Rugby Club, she quickly demonstrated natural talent and joined the club’s Under-18 team soon after. Her passion for the game grew, leading her to secure a sports scholarship at Newcastle University, where she played for the university’s first team for four years. In May 2025, Hermione attended an Under-23 trial day with Leicester Tigers Women. Her impressive performance earned her an invitation to pre-season training , and by August, she was offered a contracted place within the squad. Typically playing in the back row as a flanker, Hermione now has the opportunity to compete at the top level of the women’s game. Balancing a demanding rugby schedule with her role in the Reactive Purchasing Department at FBS Hörmann has required commitment and teamwork both on and off the field. Thanks to a flexible working arrangement, Hermione is now able to finish early three days a week, allowing her to attend training sessions in Leicester. “The support from Hörmann has been incredible,” says Hermione. “Having the opportunity to play in the Premiership Women’s Rugby league is a dream come true, but it comes with significant travel and training commitments. Hörmann’s sponsorship and flexibility have made it possible for me to pursue this opportunity and continue developing as a player. “We’re incredibly proud of Hermione’s success and delighted that our backing is making a real difference in helping to support young and talented athletes like her,” said Wolfgang Gorner, Managing Director at Hörmann UK. “Her dedication, teamwork, and determination reflect the very values that drive our business.” www.hormann.co.uk
19 Door Industry Journal Spring 2026 Building the Future Why Security is the Blueprint for Britain’s Housing Boom The government’s ambitious Getting Britain Building Again initiative is a watershed moment for the UK economy. With plans to reform planning regulations and deliver 1.5 million homes over the next parliament, the construction sector is poised for an unprecedented surge. For manufacturers of doors, windows, and locks, this represents a massive window of opportunity - but it also carries a profound responsibility. AS WE scale up production, we must resist the temptation to prioritise quantity over quality. Sub-standard fixtures do more than just frustrate homeowners; they place a preventable burden on the environment, local authorities, and the criminal justice system. While Part Q of the Building Regulations provides a mandatory security baseline, it is exactly that: a minimum. To truly future-proof these 1.5 million homes, developers and manufacturers are increasingly turning to Secured by Design (SBD). Known as the “Police Preferred Specification”, SBD standards far exceed basic building regulations. For over 25 years, this standard has identified products robust enough to resist physical attack by opportunistic burglars. It remains the only way for security products to achieve official UK police recognition. The secret to a truly secure development lies in the Designing Out Crime philosophy. By embedding crime prevention techniques into the very fabric of a building - from the initial blueprint to the final brick - developers can earn the prestigious SBD Development Award. This process is supported by specialist police Designing Out Crime Officers (DOCOs), who provide free, expert guidance to ensure every aspect of a site contributes to a safe environment. The result? Award-winning spaces where residents, business users, and visitors feel genuinely secure. For manufacturers, SBD membership is more than a badge of honour; it is a powerful driver of ROI. • Rigorous testing: Every SBD-listed product undergoes independent testing by UKAS-accredited bodies • Sustainability: High-quality, secure products last longer and are less likely to need replacement due to criminal damage • Market visibility: The police service actively directs high-volume buyers - including architects and large-scale developers - to SBD members In an industry where trust is the primary currency, the Police Preferred Specification instantly elevates a brand above the competition. It provides clear evidence of quality that resonates with consumers and satisfies mandatory security requirements across England, Scotland, and Wales. Every family deserves a home that is both decent and secure. As we embark on this national building mission, we invite manufacturers and developers to join the industry leaders who have already discovered the benefits of SBD. By prioritising security today, we build the resilient, cohesive, and vibrant communities of tomorrow. www.securedbydesign.com Jon Cole Jon Cole, Chief Operating Officer Secured by Design SECURED BY DESIGN Also online at www.dijonline.co.uk
20 Industry News Also online at www.dijonline.co.uk Door Industry Journal Spring 2026 DHF marks the retirement of Senior Training & Compliance Officer, Nick Perkins The Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) is announcing the retirement of one of its Senior Training & Compliance Officer, Nick Perkins, recognising his long-standing contribution to the Federation’s work and to the continued professionalisation of the Automated gate and door industry. IN 2010, Nick joined the sector at a time when the understanding of safety legislation and standards was uneven and, in some areas, limited. Since 2000, DHF records indicate around 30 deaths and serious injuries associated with non-compliant systems, leading to more than 20 criminal prosecutions. The tragic incidents that occurred in 2010 involving automated sliding gates brought into sharp focus the urgent need for clearer guidance, improved competence and consistent training across the industry. In response, DHF strengthened its focus on safety, compliance and education, establishing a dedicated automated gate group and developing structured guidance and training for members and the wider sector. Nick was closely involved in this work from an early stage. As part of the committee formed to support the development of DHF’s first automated gate training courses, he contributed a growing technical understanding that helped shape training that was both thorough and accessible. Following the successful launch of the initial courses, Nick accepted a permanent role with DHF, beginning a long association with the Federation’s technical and training activity. Since that time, DHF’s training provision has grown significantly. More than 6,500 learners have now completed DHF training across a comprehensive programme covering automated gates and traffic barriers, shutters, industrial and garage doors, fire shutters and dock levellers, delivered through a range of formats including distance learning. Working in collaboration with partners, the Federation has also expanded into fire door inspection, timber and steel doorset installation repair & maintenance and security &emergency exit doorsets training, as well as the provision of CSCS cards for the door, gate, shutter and loading bay equipment sectors. Alongside this, discussions are underway with a national college network to develop a new apprenticeship scheme for the industry, while relevant NVQs are being delivered through DHF’s sister organisation, Entrance Systems Alliance (ESA). Training has been just one aspect of DHF’s work during Nick’s tenure. The Federation’s technical team now responds to around 6,000 technical enquiries each year, delivers seminars to members, undertakes on-site system assessments and provides expert witness support to investigating authorities. This breadth of activity reflects DHF’s wider role in supporting compliance, raising standards and promoting best practice across the industry. The impact of this collective effort is clear. Where once compliance with key safety standards such as EN 12453 was limited, awareness and implementation are now far more widespread. “Today, the industry today is far better informed, more professional and more accountable, with safety firmly embedded alongside commercial growth,” explains DHF’s Commercial Director, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens. “While this progress is the result of many contributors, it is clear that Nick has played a considerable part in supporting DHF’s mission to drive improvement and reduce risk across the sector. “As he retires, DHF thanks him for his tireless commitment and service over many years. The Federation will now look to grow its technical team further, building on the strong foundations already in place and continuing to lead the industry on safety, competence and compliance.” www.dhfonline.org.uk
