The problem that contractors, Laing O’Rourke had, is one that most contractors encounter with maglocks and that is the need to fit them before they can be commissioned. However, there is then the issue of whether the mag and armature will still align at this point and if they don’t then it is a real headache to resolve. Mike Gillespie, MD of Gingers Spark explains: “Laing O’Rourke chose the Gingers Spark SDGi infinitely adjustable maglock bracket, as it addressed all these problems. The bracket allows the magnet to slide backwards and forwards and ensure that the armature and magnet meet flush every time the door closes, which also maintains the full holding force that the maglock manufacturer states. “Importantly it meant that when the locks were ready for commissioning this was achieved smoothly and quickly and it only took a minute for the engineer to align and fully secure. The installers were impressed too as it was only taking them 15 – 20 mins to fit each maglock and bracket again adding to the efficiency that Laings required. “The other part of the remit was to reduce the amount of call backs to the locks once the building had been handed over and we were also able to address this because the bracket creates such a true and secure alignment there is less to go wrong. However, if the door drops and the lock needed repositioning to maintain security then this is something that can be achieved in a couple of minutes by site maintenance staff rather than having to call out an engineer which in itself can be costly and time consuming”. Mike added: “It is also worth mentioning the Diax maglocks from CDVI that were used with the bracket. As this was a high profile site, safety and quality were paramount and these maglocks provided everything from rounded ‘soft’ edges rather than sharp corners and illuminated end caps so that it was easily identifiable from a distance whether the lock was engaged or not”. The Academy teaches lean leadership skills and techniques to participants from a wide range of manufacturing industries. During the course, delegates learn how to deploy lean tools to eliminate waste and continuously improve manufacturing processes. After their intensive 2 week development workshop, both Roy and Connor are now back at Garage Door Systems implementing new and improved production processes.
