Accordingly, the federal states prescribe certain time limits for the deployment of emergency doctors and firefighters. For the new fire station in Wiesdorf, a district of Leverkusen, these are eight minutes - so it was important to ensure that everything would run smoothly during the planning and construction phases. The doors of the vehicle halls must open quickly and reliably, and in an emergency seconds are crucial. In the end the fire department chose 62! aluminium sectional doors from Alpha Deuren. If an emergency call is received at the fire brigade control centre, the clocks suddenly run differently: the emergency services must be alerted and move out of the station, every second counts until the fire brigade arrives at the scene. This period of time is called the \help period’, after which the fire brigade and rescue services have to orient themselves. In North Rhine-Westphalia it is eight minutes - that’s how long the emergency services of the new main fire and rescue station in Leverkusen have to be at the scene of an accident. It goes without saying that doors for the vehicle halls needed for this purpose, must open at lightning speed. This is where the Dutch manufacturer Alpha Deuren comes into play with its ALU sectional doors. 62 units from the ALU 60 range, with 60mm fully glazed aluminium sections were installed in the fire station, 58 of them with modern GfA control, which opens the door three times faster than conventional drives. In this way, the ALU doors in Leverkusen move about 0.5 metres per second - with a door height of 4.5 metres, the vehicles can thus be deployed after only nine seconds. This is a valuable time saver that could potentially save lives in the end. 62 aluminium sectional doors adorn the halls of the fire station: 41 of them measure 3700 x 4500 mm , 12 measure 3800 x 4500 mm and nine others measure 3650 x 4500 mm. The 11,100 square metres of floor space in the fire station can accommodate 57 vehicles and 130 employees. With the upcoming move to the new location, the Leverkusen fire department will have a state-of-the-art building that meets the highest technical and safety requirements. High quality at a reasonable price is an important criterion for investment by a municipality like the city of Leverkusen. Cost- benefit attributes such as those met by Alpha Deuren with its sectional doors. These are highly insulating and have excellent thermal insulation. Anodised aluminium frames, which prevent expansion in warm weather, and triple glazing are standard. 60 THE door industry journal summer 2020 A total of 62 Alpha Deuren ALU 60 sectional doors can be found in the vehicle halls of the new main fire and rescue station in Leverkusen. Highest quality at a low price and thus an excellent cost-benefit ratio were the deciding factors for the manufacturer’s highly insulating doors. The fully glazed doors ensure maximum light penetration inside the building during the day, which saves additional lighting. 58 of the 62 aluminium sectional doors are equipped with a GFA drive, which enables a fast opening of up to 0.5 metres per second. This means that the 4.5 meter high doors can be raised in just nine seconds and the fire brigade vehicles can be deployed.
