Meet the Cobalt and Cobalt mini. For what application(s) was the lock originally designed and how has it evolved? The Cobalt and Cobalt mini came about after talking and listening to our distributors and customers who found a gap in the solenoid lock marketplace, specifically around sideload and misalignment. Traditional solenoids weren’t designed to release under sideload pressure, making them a liability in emergencies. Unaligned doors can wreak havoc on secure access control systems – which is why we designed the Cobalt and Cobalt mini to solve misalignment issues up to 8mm. Cobalt and the Cobalt mini are low voltage motor-driven door locks for both 90º and 180º swing doors. They have been designed to secure both single and double-acting doors and are revolutionary because they specifically address the two main issues in door locking - the ability to align a misaligned door and release when requested, even under excessive side load on the door. How does it solve misalignment, and why is this important? With its innovative design, the Cobalt lock automatically corrects door misalignment of +/-8mm. A common problem with traditional electromechanical locks, on both 90º and 180º swing doors, is the gap is too large for the lock to resecure an entryway. The Cobalt aligns the door to ensure it closes and locks and sends feedback to an access control panel. What do you mean by “release under sideload?” With its patented innovative bolt and strike design, we’ve engineered the Cobalt series to release when requested, even under significant sideload pressure; something traditional electromechanical locks aren’t able to. For example, on a swing door, pressure could be applied from either side and the lock will still release when needed. Sideload pressure release was initially designed as a safety feature where the lock will release in an emergency. However, we’ve seen the convenience of this recognised in historic buildings with warped door frames, with weather and brush seals creating pressure and with positive air pressure from industrial air conditioning in commercial buildings. What specifications and certifications make this lock distinctive in the market? The Cobalt and Cobalt mini both hold a range of standard compliance and certifications* while exceeding key standards in strength and fire safety. In addition, the Cobalt and Cobalt mini are both certified for 30 minutes, 60 minutes, and 4 hours burn time to ensure our locks won’t compromise a fire door’s effectiveness; making it an ideal lock for all high footfall buildings. What are the ideal applications or markets for this product? The Cobalt and Cobalt-mini can be used in the majority of applications where there is high footfall usage. Most commonly, we see them used in commercial doors connected to access control systems and in residential, government, healthcare and aviation.
