Claire examines the issues at hand and offers sensitive support for retailers to ensure a good security system is in place, to help manage and mitigate the risk, of internal and external theft. UK economic forecasters warn of millions falling into food and fuel poverty, with surging inflation expected to hit 15% over the summer. Even the new chief of Britain’s national police watchdog and HM Chief Inspector of Constabulary says: “I think whenever you see an increase in the cost of living or whenever you see more people dropping into poverty, you’ll invariably see a rise in crime.” 2022 Crime Report The 2022 Crime Report shows that on average, each store in the convenience sector spent over £5,000 on crime prevention measures. Findings reveal that over £246m was invested in crime prevention across the sector over the last year. This investment is targeted at tackling the 970,000 incidents of theft. But not only is this coming from external threats but also internal theft accounts for over 22% of UK retail shrinkage according to the Centre for Retail Research. What can we do to help? Retailers have designed-in security and technology to their operational processes. As an industry, we have a duty to sensitively support them and demonstrate how simple measures to improve security standards can make a significant difference. The important message is to break down the popular misconception that any investment in security is expensive and complicated. In fact, modular systems such as eCLIQ locks are quick and easy to install, with no cabling required, offering an instant low-maintenance solution. eCLIQ and SMARTair solutions present audit trail capability where retailers are provided with comprehensive data illustrating who accesses which lock and when. This is ideal for retailers who are concerned about staff or those who want to determine who should have access to certain assets. All of these can be managed remotely from anywhere, through mobile-first technology. Mechanical locks and high-security cylinder suites still provide the backbone for many premises’ security portfolios. Master key suites can be designed to present layers of access, so only a certain number of personnel get access to all areas and then it is permission-based. Replacing legacy systems with the likes of MTL300 Break Secure® 3XP can offer the necessary patented protection from cylinder manipulation attacks. It also makes copying keys harder so that they are less likely to fall into the wrong hands. Mul-T-Lock has been involved right from initial design and specification processes in stores looking to enhance their security from perimeter systems through to display cabinets. Mechanical and electromechanical upgrades may not be the obvious visual deterrent compared to CCTV, but they will make it difficult for the opportunist criminal and help to prevent stores from being targeted, on an internal and external basis.
