Door Industry Journal - Winter 2020

THE door industry journal winter 2020 Also online at: www.dijonline.co.uk Secured by Design The article on the opposite pages shows Secured by Design (SBD) at its best: how we work with partner organisations to incorporate crime prevention measures into new buildings to deter and reduce crime – making them safer places and reduce demand on police forces. We’ve been doing this work since 1989 with a proven track record of crime reductions in many building sectors. Whilst many of your readers – especially those from our member companies – are likely to be aware of SBD in relation to products such as doors and windows, some may not be aware of the complex work we do in the design and application of wider security measures and use of buildings. We are deeply committed to working closely with the governments of the four UK Nations to reduce criminal opportunity from the outset – often starting with national planning and building policies. Our umbrella organisation, Police Crime Prevention Initiatives (PCPI), of which SBD is the most well-known of the nine initiatives it administers, is currently supporting the Home Office’s £25m Safer Streets Fund (SSF), which has invited Police and Crime Commissioners to make bids for funding to reduce crimes such as burglary through such measures as better home security, locked gates to alleyways, increased street lighting and CCTV. PCPI has been producing several technical support documents on behalf of the Home Office and is providing ongoing technical support throughout the process. PCPI’s Police Crime Prevention Academy has developed a specialised workshop to help the recipients of this year’s fund to successfully meet the objective of growing local capability to undertake data driven problem solving, as well as providing them with practical learning about how best to implement situational interventions to prevent crime and to effectively evidence this. PCPI has a diverse mix of professional staff with a variety of expertise in specialist subjects, many of whom have honed their expertise during successful police careers. They have a passionate desire to continue to serve our communities by actively seeking ways to reduce criminality in collaboration with SBD member companies. Jon Cole, Chief Operating Officer Secured by Design A regular column by Jon Cole, Chief Operating Officer, Secured by Design, the official police security initiative, which has been delivering a wide range of crime prevention activities across the UK for over 30 years and operates a product-based police accreditation scheme for security-rated products. Jon Cole issues that weren’t obvious from the site plans,” she explained. Inspector Matt Turner, Metropolitan Police, said: “Early engagement and good partnership working has ensured security considerations have been incorporated in a subtle manner and not seen as an awkward after- thought. The Town House is a great facility for the students and local community and the design will help reduce opportunities for crime and demand on policing.” Gary Young, Estates Town House Technical Co-ordinator, said they had visited a number of universities and found security levels ranging from relaxed to imposing – and in some cases found security compromised by the building’s architecture. “We looked at it a different way. All our buildings make up an open campus – exactly what we want. Assessing the needs of students, staff and the public has been complicated but we have found a resolution,” he said. Ian Appleford, Head of Health, Safety and Security, said: “We are a community facing organisation and want the building to be seen and appreciated. We have ensured that reasonable measures and restrictions are in place that can be applied as and when we need them. This helps us use the building for a range of purposes.”
