CASE STUDY: SeceuroFire Shutter Ensures Primary School in Boston Meets Fire Regulations SWS UK, the manufacturer of SeceuroFire shutters and curtains, recently provided a solution to a Lincolnshire based primary school, which required a product to ensure fire regulations were achieved within the school. The Customer: The primary school, which is located in the market town of Boston, approached MJE Contracts, who later worked alongside one of SWS UK’s SeceuroFire distributors, KCS Doors, in the hope that they could assist them with a product that would solve a gap in fire regulations within the school’s gymnasium. The Requirements: A brick wall within the school’s gym held a fire rating, however the previous access door, which was made of plastic, did not. Fire regulations stipulated that the plastic door would need to be replaced with a product that had either an equal, or higher fire rating than the wall. The Solution: During school hours, the school preferred the door clearance to remain open to allow easy access in and out of the space, meaning conventional fire doors, which must always remain closed, were not a suitable option. KCS Doors, who are based in Leicestershire, advised the school that a SeceuroFire shutter would allow the clearance to remain open, while the automatic deployment of the shutter in the event of an emergency or test, would ensure regulations and fire safety measures were met. Following advice from fire safety regulators and MJE Contracts, the school requested an integrity rating of 2 hours (120 mins) and decided on a powder coated finish of Ultramarine Blue, RAL 5002, which matched existing fixtures and the school’s brand. The school were also pleased to discover that the shutter could be closed outside of school hours, providing additional security and a secure method of storing gym equipment. The Installation Manufactured and supplied by SWS UK in early September, the shutter was installed in just one day by the team at KCS Doors, just in time for the start of a new academic year. The Outcome: Upon completion of the installation, the school’s caretaker Ian, who had been the main point of contact throughout the project, praised the product’s unobtrusive design and intuitive operation. Ken Mayes, the manager at KCS Doors also commented on the project: “This was the first SeceuroFire shutter installed by KCS Doors, and despite having initial reservations because of the slightly higher cost, we have been extremely impressed with the quality of the product and SWS UK’s attention to detail, which combined, resulted in a door that was easier and quicker to install. Less time on site has drastically reduced both our labour and fitment costs and has gone some considerable way towards negating the initial higher outlay. Using SWS Online for the initial quotation, and later to place the order is a game changer and made the whole process so simple, from start to finish”. The Product: The SeceuroFire Fire Shutter is an electrically operated vertical fire shutter, consisting of a 75 mm scrolled curtain and galvanised steel box assembly and guide rails. Its design allows for both face or reveal installations and the box, curtain, guide rails and bottom rail can all be powder coated as an optional extra. Designed to be a security barrier during normal use and to be closed automatically during an emergency or test. In the event of receiving a fire alarm signal the shutter will perform a powered descent to create a fire-resistant barrier. If power failure occurs, the shutter will close using the intelligent battery backup feature. The SeceuroFire Fire Shutter has been tested to BS EN 16034: shutters product standard, fire resisting characteristics and BS EN 13241: shutters product standard, performance characteristics. The product was tested and approved by Warrington Fire, report 413395. www.sws.co.uk/commercial/fire-protection/ Also online at: www.dijonline.co.uk Industrial Doors & Shutters 76 THE door industry journal winter 2020
