This provides assurance that products have been produced under a controlled manufacturing environment in accordance with the specifier’s aims and minimises misrepresentation of the products by unscrupulous manufacturers/suppliers and leads to the delivery, on site, of a more secure product. Better quality means these products last longer too, making them more cost effective and leading to greater sustainability in crime prevention. This work to improve the physical security of buildings using SBD-accredited products is the reason so many door and window companies are seeing huge benefits in SBD membership. There has been a significant growth in demand for advice and requests for details of companies that have membership with SBD, which has been evidenced in the increased traffic to the SBD website and the reported increased sales of SBD members’ products. Every day Police Designing Out Crime Officers (DOCOs) are collaborating closely with builders, developers, local authorities and housing associations to incorporate Secured by Design’s (SBD) police crime prevention standards into buildings. The police service signpost customers looking for security products to www.securedbydesign.com, where a comprehensive list of the many hundred companies that produce the products that meet SBD Police Preferred Specification can be found. Each company has its own page on the SBD website giving full details of the company, contact information and a detailed list of all their SBDaccredited products. The environmental benefits of SBD are supported by independent academic research consistently proving that SBD housing developments experience up to 87% less burglary, 25% less vehicle crime and 25% less criminal damage. It also has a significant impact on anti-social behaviour. Therefore, there are substantial carbon cost savings associated with building new homes and refurbishing existing homes to the SBD standard i.e. less replacement of poor quality doors, windows and the stolen property from within the home as a result of criminal acts. This has been achieved through adherence to well-researched and effective design solutions, innovative and creative product design coupled with robust manufacturing standards. SBD represents a powerful, trusted police brand which inspires greater public confidence in products and is the only way for companies to obtain police recognition for security-related products in the UK. However, almost all types of acquisitive crime can be defended against by the implementation of physical security measures, with commensurate security products and design features providing a level of physical security that will defeat the abilities of the average criminal by deterring, delaying and detecting their nefarious activities. It is thus clear that having doors and windows achieve an appropriate security standard is both vitally important and a worthwhile investment. In the article opposite, you will read about the importance of the Police Preferred Specification standard for security products and how it’s a vital part of keeping our communities safe. However, one key factor that is crucial to this work is the importance of partnership working. By working in partnership, we can make a positive difference. We can change lives for the better and help people to be safe and secure in their homes. After all, that’s a basic desire and aspiration we all want. This can be achieved by many sectors working in close partnership, utilising the skills and experience of industry professionals and the adoption of effective security standards. Secured by Design works closely with a huge range of partners - central government, manufacturers and companies involved in security products (within the UK and those in countries that supply the UK), standards authorities and key stakeholders such as Planners, Architects, Developers, Local Authorities, Housing Associations, academia and the public – in our work to keep people safe. And it does work. SBD members’ products have been highlighted for the significant role they play in crime prevention and keeping people safe, with Nottingham City Homes and Nottingham Trent University attributing SBD doors and windows alone to deliver a 43% reduction in burglary. The council had installed SBD standard double glazing windows and new doors as part of Nottingham’s Secure, Warm, Modern scheme, the city’s Decent Homes Programme. Following the work, a two-year impact study on the benefits of the work, comparing crime rates and perceptions before and after. It is clear that this type of partnership working delivers lifelong benefits to the environment, to society and most importantly, to people.
