Also online at: www.dijonline.co.uk THE door industry journal spring 2019 Industry News New course from HSL Training Offers Comprehensive Gate Automation Skills package In this article, Jonathan Aldred, Director of HSL Training, introduces his new gate installation training course. Jonathan, on behalf of Ellard Ltd, has been responsible for specifying automation and safety products since 2010. During that time, he has also carried out both classroom and onsite practical training. Ellard Ltd are a leading distributor of Industrial door motors and controls, gate/barrier and access control solutions, as well as auto- door and motorised blind products. With the recent inclusion of NRG Automation into the Ellard Group, the group’s staff count is over 50 - with a company turnover of around £17m. The new course from HSL Training - a five-day Gate Installer Diploma - is aimed at both current gate installers wishing to improve their skills and knowledge, and those wanting to join the sector. Over recent years, and unfortunately only after a number of tragic incidents involving automatic gates, I believe great progress toward better safety has now been made. The dhf , gate automation manufacturers, suppliers, gate fabricators and installers have all come together to increase awareness of the need for safer systems, and agree (mostly) on a set of best working practices and methods for developing safer systems by design. As a JIB-approved electrician, and NICEIC-registered qualified supervisor, the importance of having the right training - and the challenge of keeping up with ever changing regulations to remain qualified, or at least competent - are all too familiar. This is why I believe the availability of quality gate automation installation training, which combines theory and practice, is crucial. The aim of the Gate Installer Diploma (GID) is to instruct technically-skilled candidates in key areas of the gate automation installation process. The syllabus covers many of the skills necessary to achieve the Door & Gate Systems NVQ Level 2. We are working with the NVQ assessors involved in delivering the Door & Gate Systems NVQ Level 2. For those requiring a permanent ‘skilled’ blue CSCS card, we are able to assess them over the course, and if required, advise on further training - increasing the likelihood of reaching the standard necessary to get the NVQ. Qualified individuals with real life experience in their relevant field deliver each element of instruction over the five-day GID course. I believe this approach gives every candidate on the course, regardless of current experience level, the opportunity to expand their skills and knowledge base. GID CANDIDATES ARE INSTRUCTED AND ASSESSED IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS: 1. Safety - taught by a qualified IOSH Health & Safety instructor: a. Health and safety regulations and responsibilities b. Safe use of power tools, including abrasive wheel c. Working at height d. Risk assessments 8
