The Snowdon challenge will see Matt and four of his family and friends scale Wales’ highest mountain dressed as cartoon mascots to increase awareness of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, raising money in the process. The team were inspired following a family friend’s child being diagnosed with the terminal disease, Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Duchenne UK is a charity dedicated to research and development towards a cure by connecting drug researchers, the NHS and families together. Matt is co-owner of Mad4Mascots, a local mascot company that offers favourite childrens’ characters out to hire for special occasions. They decided to don their costumes to help make a difference for this worthwhile cause. The Snowdon climb is planned for a Saturday in May, with the exact date dependent on the safest weather conditions. Fundraising is already well underway, with plenty more visits to take place beforehand, including an in-character visit to Oswestry’s Good Friday celebrations. The team has been training in the gym and on local hill walks. A recent walk up Rodney’s Pillar has given a hint as to how challenging Snowdon will be while wearing the costumes, which heavily restrict vision and movement. Matt said: “Rodney’s Pillar was a reality check in terms of how difficult it will be to walk a distance while fully suited up! But we are doing this to support a cause which is very close to our hearts so we’re all determined to reach the top of Snowdon”.
